Inventories held by wholesalers are expected to show a moderate gain in February, helped by an increase in sales.

The economic recovery needs wholesalers to begin consistently restocking their depleted shelves, which would mean higher orders to factories and rising demand for manufacturing workers.

Economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect inventories will show a 0.4 percent increase in February after declining 0.2 percent in January.

The expectation is that sales at the wholesale level will rise by 0.5 percent in February following an even stronger 1.3 percent increase in January. The January sales gain had been the 10th consecutive gain.

Analysts are hoping that the string of sales increases will prompt businesses to begin restocking their depleted shelves on a sustained basis, giving a boost to the economy as it struggles to recover from the worst recession since the 1930s.

A rebound in stockpiles would follow a massive inventory liquidation which occurred during the recession as businesses searched for ways to keep costs under control.

Inventories at the wholesale level through January had been down 15 of the prior 17 months.

Economists believe the current recovery cannot be sustained unless businesses begin consistently restocking their shelves.

Wholesalers hold 25 percent of all inventories with manufactures holding about one-third and retailers holding the rest.

The swing from massive inventory reductions contributed about two-thirds of the economy’s overall growth in the October-December quarter, a period when the gross domestic product expanded at a 5.6 percent annual rate.
